Following the death of cancer patient Joan Rayment, a joint investigation was launched by the HSE & Sussex Police. What they found was historical failures to identify the deadly virus. Although the trust were monitoring water temperatures and legionella across its sites, at the time of Mrs Rayment’s death 114 positive legionella tests, along with around 650 records of water temperatures being outside the required parameters were not acted upon.
Lewis Crown Court sentenced the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton on 11th June 2015, and were fined £50,000.
