At MSL, we integrate Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles into the very core of our business operations. We’re committed to sustainability and transparent governance, and carry out all our work with ethical practices top of mind, prioritising the wellbeing of our people, customers, and the planet too.
Environmental Commitments
We work hard to ensure our business — as well as our services — are carried out as sustainably as possible. Here’s just a handful of the ways we’re working to reduce our carbon footprint and bolster our efforts to go green:
- A number of MSL staff use company cars, and for those staff we now only offer hybrid or electric vehicles, reducing the fuel used by our team on the job, but off the clock too.
- We also currently hold the ISO 14001 — an internationally recognised standard for environmental management systems.
- To reduce the amount of waste and recycling generated by our business, we also use the PaperCut application, which helps us monitor and manage our printing.
- We practice sound stewardship by sourcing our timber products according to Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or similar accredited scheme guidelines.
- Recently, we carried out an independent energy survey and shared the results company wide, which successfully increased awareness of our energy usage amongst our staff.
We’re also tracking our carbon footprint every year, with Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials. Take a look at the figures for 2023 below:
Our Eco Maintenance Service
Our commitment to sustainability also extends into our services, and giving our clients more environmentally-friendly options too; that’s why we launched our eco maintenance service.
This service offers a simple way to reduce your call-out costs and lower your carbon footprint, as we group a selection non-urgent works in a single visit, like repairs or decorative touch-ups.
Social Strategy
At MSL, we also take the responsibility we hold for the mental and physical welfare of our staff seriously — even featuring in The Sunday Times list of the “Best Places to Work 2024”. We forged our company vision and values in a collaborative process we underwent as a business, eventually creating a 360-degree approach that centres around respect, with other leading principles like development, teamwork, community and integrity.

Working with Charities
We also firmly believe that, as a successful company, we should contribute to the community we operate in, and we’re proud to support a number of different local and national UK-based charities on a regular basis. As well as working with well-known organisations like Children in Need, Comic Relief and the British Heart Foundation, we also support several smaller charities, such as:
- Overgate Hospice, our main charities partner which is a fantastic independent charity in Halifax that facilitates expert care and support for adults living with life-limiting illnesses in Calderdale.
- Andy’s Man Club, a brilliant charity for the prevention of men’s suicide, which runs free, peer-to-peer support groups both online and in-person across the UK.
You can find out more about our work with these organisations over on our blog.
Our Approach to Governance
MSL is committed to doing business in an open, fair, honest and ethical manner. We fully comply with the Bribery Act 2010, and only work with suppliers and subcontractors who also adhere to the standards set by that regulation. We also go above and beyond to ensure that all our employees are of legal working age, and have the right to work in the UK.
Here are some of the other ways we practice a high standard of governance at MSL:
- Ethical conduct. We adhere to a rigorous code of conduct, which asks that all our employees and board members act with integrity and honesty, avoid conflicts of interest, and protect confidential information.
- Transparency and accountability. We prioritise these qualities by actively engaging with our stakeholders to incorporate their feedback, providing our stakeholders with clear and in-depth reports, and carrying out regular internal and external auditing.
- Risk management. To manage risk, MSL performs regular assessments to identify any potential vulnerabilities, develops advanced risk mitigation strategies, and maintains a detailed crisis management plan to ensure business continuity.
