International Management Standard ISO 41000 Approved

A new international standard for facilities management has been formally approved to proceed into development by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) following a poll of its 163 member organisations earlier this year. The ISO 41000 series will be the home of the ‘Management System Standard’ for Facilities Management.

As a strategic tool and set of guidelines, the standard will set out a structure and framework as well as organisational processes along with the need for key skills and competencies. The standard will provide appropriate guidance in a similar manner as the Quality, Occupational Safety and Health and Environmental Management System Standards that already exist.

The development of standards in facilities management dates back to 2003. It was launched within Europe to gather different European countries, to develop Facilities Management as a professional discipline and increase the recognition. It was determined that to do so we had to start developing standards.

BIFM has been involved from the beginning, through our work within the BSI Facilities Management Committee, representation at a European level within the CEN 348 Technical Committee, and more recently through the establishment of and Chairing the new ISO Technical Committee 267 for Facilities Management.

The UK has also contributed to the work that goes on behind the scenes through providing the Convener to lead the development of the BS EN 15221-2 Guidance of FM Agreements standard and BS EN 15221-7.
